Find Your Why: The Real Reason I Keep Showing Up

At CrossFit Yarmouth, we lift heavy things, cheer each other on, and get a little sweaty — okay, a lot sweaty — in the process. But behind every rep, every burpee, and every early morning alarm clock, there’s something deeper driving us. Something personal. Something powerful.

That something is your why.

And today, I want to share mine.

My Why, Then and Now

My “why” for training at Beacon — and now Yarmouth — for the past 12 years has definitely evolved. But at its core, it’s always been about the same thing: my mental health and physical health are deeply connected.

Even as a teenager, I knew this — although I wouldn’t have admitted it at the time. I remember spiraling over school or friends or a boy, and my mom would ask, “When was the last time you went for a run?” I’d stomp around, annoyed, but eventually put on my shoes. And sure enough, I’d return with a clear head and a grounded perspective.

Movement has always been my therapy.

Running was my happy place for a long time. But after college sports and jumping into adulthood, I realized something was missing — something just as important as the physical release.

I was craving connection. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself.

CrossFit Changed My Life (And Not for the Reasons I Expected)

I joined CrossFit at a tumultuous time in my life. Everything felt like it was falling apart, and I was tired of life just happening to me. I was ready to start taking back the narrative.

I thought that throwing around weights and pushing through high-intensity workouts would be what saved me.
But I was wrong.

It wasn’t the workouts.
It was the people.

I remember walking in that first day and feeling like it was the first day of school all over again — that cafeteria moment where you’re not sure where to sit. But something unexpected happened: every time I showed up, people I didn’t know went out of their way to say hi, introduce themselves, and help me feel welcome.

Over time, the community wore me down — in the best way.
I realized I’d found something I hadn’t even known I was missing: a group that accepted me exactly as I was.

I didn’t need to already be super fit (for the record, I was in the worst shape of my life after being a college athlete when I joined).
But I had found my team again.

How My Training Has Shifted — and Why That Matters

What my training has looked like over the past 12 years has changed a lot — because life has changed.

I’ve navigated pregnancy, pregnancy loss, postpartum recovery, and injury (not from the gym). I’ve rebuilt my fitness from the ground up, learning how to move safely, reconnect with my core, and yes — how to jump rope without peeing my pants. (Shout out to The Momma Movement for giving me the tools, support, and empowerment I needed through those chapters.)

My short-term goals have shifted depending on the season of life I’m in. But my why has always had the same thread to it.

So What’s My Why Now?

I train to build the biggest buffer possible between myself and injury or illness — so I can live a long, active life with my kids.
But the secret that keeps me coming back?

Being in community with others who cheer me on — and that I can cheer on right back.
That’s where the real magic lives.

What’s Your Why?

Maybe your why is similar to mine. Maybe it’s completely different. But I promise you — when you know your why, everything changes.

You show up with purpose. You push through with intention. You start to trust that you’re not just working out — you’re building something meaningful.

And even if your why changes (because it probably will), that’s okay too. Let it evolve as you grow. Let it reflect the season you’re in.
