
Longevity is something I’ve heard over and over as I’ve gotten to know this community at CrossFit Yarmouth — and it feels like the perfect place to kick off our new blog. So here we go!
Now don’t get me wrong — hitting new PRs, mastering handstand push-ups, and testing one-rep maxes are a lot of fun. But at the end of the day, we’re playing the long game, my friends.
This journey is really about making sure we can still sit down and stand up from the toilet at 90 years old. It’s about carrying our own bags of groceries up a flight of stairs. It’s about bending down to pick something up off the floor — and doing it all independently, with strength, confidence, and pride.
It’s about staying as healthy as possible for as long as possible — so we can enjoy as much of life as possible.
You might be wondering: Why worry about this now?
Because now is when we build the buffer. Now is when we invest in ourselves, so that when inevitable changes come with aging, we’re starting from a stronger, healthier place.
- Now is the time to build strength.
- Now is the time to develop core stability.
- Now is the time to work on balance.
- Now is the time to challenge our nervous system with new movement patterns.
- Now is the time to create “movement puzzles” that keep our brain and body working together.
- Now is the time to build up our bone density.
And here’s a fun side effect: by focusing on these things now, we’re not just setting ourselves up for later — we’re enhancing our ability to play, explore, and enjoy life along the way. We’re keeping ourselves ready to hike that mountain, join that pick-up game, chase our kids or grandkids around, and say “yes” to spontaneous adventures.
Plus, by building this foundation, we stay better positioned to handle any health challenges or injuries that might pop up along the way. Stronger, more resilient bodies recover faster and handle life’s curveballs better.
